Online application for foreign workers in plantation sector with special exemption is open from January 28, says Saravanan

PUTRAJAYA: Online application for recruitment of foreign workers in plantation sector through special exemption will be open from January 28 through the website, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri said Mr. Saravanan (photo).

He said applications for foreign workers for other sectors, including the plantation sector without special exemption, would be open from Feb. 15.

The government had granted special permission to bring in 32,000 foreign workers through a special exemption last September to alleviate labor shortages in the plantation sector.

During the Cabinet meeting on December 10, it was agreed that the recruitment of foreign workers will be open to all sectors other than the plantation sector. The authorized sectors are agriculture, manufacturing, services, mining and quarrying, construction and domestic help.

Meanwhile, Saravanan reminded employers to follow the standard operating procedure (SOP) for admitting foreign workers established by the government.

He said the SOP covered four phases, namely pre-release, on arrival, post arrival (quarantine) and post-quarantine.

“All foreign workers are required to undergo a seven-day quarantine during which they will be screened twice for Covid-19 and the cost will be borne by the employer,” he added.

He said that currently all quarantine centers, as well as hotels for quarantine purposes, are in the Klang Valley and they can accommodate 10,000 people at a time.

In this regard, he said, the ministry welcomed willing parties to offer facilities to be used as quarantine centres. – Bernama
